Day 1: Exploring Palermo

Visiting Museums & strolling around in Gardens

This day will explore almost all of Palermo starting on the east most side. The best way to explore Buenos Aires is by neighborhood and truly spend the day in that neighbourhood exploring it.

After lunch head to museum Malba. It is a modern museum showcasing newer Latin American artwork.

After the visit it’s time to start visiting all the beautiful gardens of Buenos Aires which are basically all in Palermo. Start off with the Japanese garden, then head to the Ecoparque and finally the botanical garden. They are all right next to each other and each very different. This could be a good day to pack a book in your bag or a pack of cards so you can spend time in the garden relaxing and walking around.

As you leave the botanical garden you will be heading into Palermo Soho. This is a very cool, hip neighbourhood. Ideally you are just walking around. You’'ll stop in stores, coffee shops and explore

Some places which are worth mentioning (all within 10 mins walking from each other so do it in the order you’d like). These are also just little suggestions, as you walk you’ll surely see stuff you want to stop and check out

Now as you continue to walk around, start walking towards Villa Crespo for a late afternoon cocktail at Malvon. This is an absolute gem of a place and we kept returning again and again. But this could be a good day to head there. Their baked goods are fabulous so grab a pastry and an aperol spritz and sit in their gorgeous back patio (NOT the one in the front). Their food is delicious if you wish to return for a meal another time on your trip

Day 2: San Telmo

Ecological Park, Exploring the Neighbourhood & Tango Lesson!

San Telmo is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires and it definitely shows. That being said it has so much character, history & energy you should not miss it. It is however very sleepy in the morning, so we would recommend getting there for a late lunch.

Start off by exploring the ecological park at the very east of the city in the late morning (like 11AM?). Get dropped off by taxi at the northern most entrance. Walk the entire reserve (the long way) you’ll get to a mini beach where you can sit and rest for a bit before continuing on your journey. You will exit at the southern most part of the park.

Once you leave the park, you will walk through Puerto Madero. Truth be told we don’t find this area that interesting, so don’t have many recommendations but to walk through it to get to San Telmo :) Once you get to San Telmo you will be very close to the “San Telmo Market”. Explore this market, the building truly is very pretty. Have lunch in the market at one of the stalls, or pick one of these places: (1) La Poesia - Cute little cafe (2) Saigon - Delicious Vietnamese food (3) Desnivel - get a choripan from the grill and walk around, don’t sit here.

Once you are all set on food, keep walking around the neighbourhood and stop where you see fit.

If you are feeling adventurous, we recommend making a reservation for a tango lesson. The lady, Guada, who was our teacher is based in San Telmo and we loved her!! She only takes 2 people and her price is very competitive. This was one of the most fund things we did in Buenos Aires and can’t recommend it highly enough. Also, if you enjoy it there are tons of Milonga’s you can attend during your trip and not look too silly :-)

After your class you owe yourself a glass of wine. Head over to our favourite wine bar we found in Buenos called Nilson”. Try some of their white wines since you may be a bit over Malbec and they have delicious ones from all over Argentina!

Day 3: Recoleta

A Day of Luxury & Museums

Recoleta has a different feel to it than the other neighbouhoods of Buenos Aires. Firstly it is quite luxurious and a marvel to walk around and explore one more beautiful building than the next! So here is our recommended day.

  1. Start off in Plaza General San Martin and immediately you’ll be able to tell you are in a different part of Buenos Aires. We played a game called “Guess which country’s consulate this is” and this was a fun way to admire the buildings and then check out the flag next to it! Walk in the direction of your next stop ahin wellness & spa palacio duhua park hyatt. and explore all the streets.

2. If you are feeling fancy, this would be a good time to get a spa treatment at the fancy spa ahin wellness & spa palacio duhua park hyatt. Of course you’ll need to have made an appointment before, so consider it!

3. Once you feel like going back into the real world, we recommend you keep walking north and head to the museum “Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes”. We enjoyed this museum a lot.

4. At this point you are close (5/10 mins walk) to a few “touristy” things you can do:

  • Floralis Generica: Frankly you can just see this and walk away. It can be cool to see at sunset when it closes, but in our opinion it can be missed.

  • Recoleta Cemetery: People love this and it is on every bloggers list. Again, we personally are not fans of visiting cemetery’s. We did visit this one and were not amazed. That being said lot’s of people see it and like it so if you are interested this would be the day since you are close!

  • Plaza Francia: A cute little park to walk around it. On Saturdays & Sundays there is a large arts market here.

5. If you are now ready for a drink, at 7PM the rooftop bar of the “Alvear Palace Hotel” opens and it is a great place to sit, order a cocktail and watch the sunset over the city.

Day 4: Iguazu Falls

Spend one day exploring the magnificent Iguazu Falls

You need one day and night in Iguazu and truly that will be enough. However, it is one of the natural wonders of the world and so easy to get to from Buenos Aires probably should not miss it.

How we did it, which we thought worked very well was: Leave your luggage at your hotel/Airbnb and only take a backpack as light as possible.

Take an afternoon flight to Iguazu from Buenos Aires, arrive around 7PM. Check into your hotel, have dinner/drinks. The next morning, you will head to the park at opening 8/8/30AM, stay the whole day and then take a 7.30PM flight back to Buenos Aires directly after the park. You truly do not need to see the Brazilian side. The Argentina side is more beautiful, easier to get to and really after seeing waterfalls all day you don’t need another day to see the same waterfalls.

Tips:

  • Book a shuttle to the park and from the park to the airport with your hotel before you get there!

  • Only pack a light backpack so you can have it with you all day and go straight to the airport

  • DO THE BOAT trip at the falls. We did Iguazu Jungle and it was so fun! Try and book this ahead of time with your hotel because it books out.

  • DO NOT GO ON A WEEKEND to Iguazu. It will be a true zoo. Trust us, go a Tuesday or Wednesday and you’ll have the park almost to yourselves and have a much more pleasant experience.

4-days-in-buenos-aires-El-Centro-Cultural-Kirchner

El Centro Cultural Kirchner

If you are interested in seeing any Theater or Music Shows, the Centro Cultural Kirchner always has a full calendar of great shows! So check out their website for tickets and you can buy them when you get to Buenos too. The building itself is very beautiful and they usually have art exhibits which you can visit when you get there a bit early before you show.

Faena Hotel: Rojo Tango Show

There are tons of Tango shows in Buenos Aires so a bit of research should get you many options.

However, we were graciously invited to a beautiful dinner and show at the Faena Rojo Tango show and it was a magnificent experience. We would 100% recommend it. It is pricey so a bit of a splurge but the experience was very memorable and a show of very high quality! If you want a memorable night, don’t hesitate to attend.

Every night there are hundred’s to choose from! So if you are feeling adventurous, check out this site and see which one’s are near you that night. Get you dancing shoes and head there!
