San Francisco Travel Tips

  • Tipping: Customary to tip 18-20% (like anywhere in the US)

  • Transportation:

    • Muni: This is the San Francisco Metro/Tram and bus system it will take you all around San Francisco proper. There is an app “Muni Mobile” where you can buy your tickets.

    • Bart: This is the train which connect San Francisco proper to Oakland and South San Francisco. You’ll need to get tickets for this at the station. You can easily take Bart from the Oakland or SFO airport into the city.

    • Caltrain: This is the train which will take you to the South Bay (Mountain View, Palo Alto etc). Separate tickets for this too and the SF Station is at “Kings Street”.

    • Uber and Lyft are your best friend.

  • Water: Safe to drink

  • Dress Code: Casual

    • It is so hilly, that you’ll see everyone wearing comfortable shoes! Ladies, feel free to bring one paid of wedges for nights on the town, but flats are perfectly acceptable.

    • It always will get cold at night, no matter the season. So always have a jacket with you at all times. The weather can change in a second and you’ll be glad you have it. (Our favourite SF jacket is this one from Uniqlo).
